Skoro kod kuće, Jakov se pribojavao susreta sa svojim bratom Ezavom s druge strane rijeke. Proveo je noć na obali, dugo i naporno se boreći s anđelom. Jakov je na kraju pobijedio do zore. Anđeo je blagoslovio Jakova i dao mu počasno ime Izrael: „onaj koji se bori s Bogom.“ Rumenilo neba koje najavljuje novi dan vjerno je dočarano.
